A dispute is unfolding on X after an Ant Group employee posted roughly 100 pages of apparently AI-generated mathematics claiming a solution to the S^6 problem, a well-known case in the classification of high-dimensional sphere structures.
Critics accused the author of publishing content he hadn't verified himself, calling it a violation of basic academic honesty, and read mathematician @littmath's remarks as endorsing the move. littmath pushed back, clarifying he was only noting that tweets don't represent all mathematicians.
His actual position: posting a PDF is not misconduct in itself as long as provenance is made clear (though it can be obnoxious); it becomes misconduct if you make false claims, such as misrepresenting yourself as having contributed to the work. He also stated he has never posted any AI-generated text.
