Claude Code adds AGENTS.md support in 2.1.277, falling back when CLAUDE.md is absent
eyishazyer · x · 2026-09-19
Claude Code now supports AGENTS.md: starting with version 2.1.277, if no CLAUDE.md exists in a folder, Claude will check for and use AGENTS.md instead. The behavior can be toggled in /config. This makes a single, tool-agnostic agent instructions file usable across Claude Code and other coding agents that already follow the AGENTS.md convention, cutting down on maintaining duplicate config files.
