Forget the AI slowdown — the AI-driven vulnerability explosion is already here

WIRED's new security newsletter Kernel Panic reports that while AI labs discuss an industry-wide slowdown pact, widely available AI chatbots (including open-weight models) are already uncovering a tidal wave of software vulnerabilities, straining under-resourced security teams and open-source maintainers.

The numbers: Microsoft shipped patches for 974 CVEs in a single month — a record; Oracle shipped 1,448 patches in July versus 309 in July 2025; Chrome's two major June releases included 1,072 patches, more than all prior fixes combined. The piece argues the feared security scenario isn't speculative — AI-accelerated bug discovery is already outpacing the human side's capacity to patch.
