Altman: OpenAI would torch every GPU it owns if that's the price of keeping humans around

Sam Altman says he would readily destroy all of OpenAI's GPUs if that were the price of ensuring humanity's survival — though he doubts it will ever come to that.
He argues there will be multiple braking points on the path to more capable AI:
- "There are going to be a lot of points along the path where we have to say, we're stopping here, and we're going to shift our energy into safety and alignment before we climb to the next tier."
- "I don't think we'll ever actually reach a moment where we're saying 'melt the GPUs.' But if torching the hardware was what it took to make sure humanity keeps existing, that's an easy yes."
