Anthropic engineer's exit sparks AI extinction warnings as French media calls AI regulation weaker than a toaster's

French satirical paper Le Canard enchaîné reports that Anthropic engineer Jacob Coxon's September 9 resignation post — viewed over 170 million times — ignited a wave of 'AIpocalypse' warnings. Anthropic researcher Evan Hubinger wrote on X: 'We genuinely believe AI could kill all humans in the coming decade,' and leading AI CEOs have called to slow the superintelligence race.
Meanwhile the regulatory reality diverges sharply: the Trump administration wants to accelerate, Europe keeps delaying enforcement of its own rules, and AI Safety Center advocacy lead Arthur Grimonpont concludes that 'today's AI is less regulated than a toaster.'
