3M paid $10.3 billion in PFAS settlements and quit manufacturing the chemicals entirely, yet the AI industry has turned PFAS into a growth market again as data centers adopt fluorinated fluids for cooling.
- The carbon-fluorine bond is the strongest single bond in organic chemistry: the fluids don't conduct electricity, survive heat, and can sit in direct contact with running chips — entire racks can be submerged.
- AI racks have jumped from 10-15 kW to over 100 kW, past what air cooling can handle; immersion cooling cuts facility water use by up to 90%.
- The catch: the same bond that survives a 100-kilowatt rack also survives your bloodstream, soil, and every water treatment plant on earth. You can't engineer one property without the other.
