- Starting with v2.1.277, Claude Code automatically reads AGENTS.md when no CLAUDE.md is present — the top feature request in the repo (5,200+ upvotes) after 13 months.
- AGENTS.md is the OpenAI-backed universal "project instructions" format used by Codex, Cursor, Copilot, Gemini CLI and Devin across 60,000+ open-source projects, now under the Linux Foundation's AAIF.
- Teams mixing tools previously had to keep duplicate instruction files and hack around it with symlinks or import lines.
- The bigger reveal: AGENTS.md support is the first built-in mod — Anthropic's upcoming plugin mechanism for customizing Claude Code's harness. Developers will be able to customize how the agent reads projects, echoing DeepSeek Harness's "everything is a plugin" approach, though as an extension point on a polished product rather than a from-scratch framework.
