shauntrennery · x · 2026-09-19
Readback is a free, MIT-licensed VS Code extension that reads your AI coding agent's replies aloud in a Speechify voice with word-by-word highlighting, condensing long replies into a few spoken sentences.
- Works via three hooks in /.claude/settings. (MessageDisplay, PreToolUse, Stop) to narrate Claude's notes between tool calls, then speak a condensed final reply
- Supports any voice your Speechify key renders, including your own clone; adjustable speed, click a word to jump
- Requires a Speechify API key (stored in VS Code secret storage, billed to your workspace)
- Installable with one prompt in Claude Code or manually via the marketplace
