Harvard pushes AI into classrooms with Claude access as faculty backlash grows

Harvard leadership, including President Alan M. Garber and Dean David Deming, is pushing AI adoption into teaching and operations, warning that failing to adapt risks being left behind — but faculty resistance is growing louder as the fall semester begins.
Concrete moves: the Bok Center issued new summer guidance encouraging instructors to spell out AI policies on syllabi; the Office of Undergraduate Education requires faculty to post AI policies on Canvas; the first-year Expository Writing course added a required AI module; and the College announced access to Anthropic's Claude for affiliates.
