Anthropic weighs early model launch as OpenAI's Astra grabs 13% of enterprise AI spend

Reuters reports Anthropic is considering releasing a new model ahead of schedule, a defensive move against OpenAI's Astra launched September 3. It comes just seven days after CEO Dario Amodei publicly called for slowing AI development, and Anthropic's IPO may slip to November.

OpenRouter data shows Astra captured about 13% of enterprise AI spend within two weeks versus 8% for the Fable series, pushing OpenAI's weekly token share to 65% in early September — overtaking Anthropic (35%) for the first time in 2.5 years. Despite Fable5.1's launch and a 75% cache price cut, enterprise customers stuck with the cheaper Opus5, and reports say Claude is deeply involved in developing the next-gen model.
