Claude Code adopts AGENTS.md, unifying the cross-vendor project instructions standard

Anthropic's Claude Code (v2.1.277+) now supports AGENTS.md: when no CLAUDE.md exists, it falls back to reading AGENTS.md, with behavior switchable via /config. Built on Claude Code's mods mechanism, the agents-md mod is open-sourced. AGENTS.md originated with OpenAI's Codex as a "README for agents" describing project structure, setup, tests, and conventions. Claude Code was the biggest holdout — developers resorted to symlinks, a maintenance burden Shopify's CEO called a "complexity tax." OpenAI Codex lead Tibo welcomed the move. Caveats: CLAUDE.md still takes priority by default and the two skills directories remain separate, but mainstream coding tools are clearly converging on shared project context.
