OpenAI reportedly buys GlassImaging for $300M+ to rethink AI camera imaging

A WSJ report says OpenAI acquired camera startup GlassImaging for over $300M (unconfirmed), adding to last year's $6.5B io deal with Jony Ive. Meanwhile AI phones are accelerating: Apple's iPhone 18 and ByteDance's Doubao phone assistant (launched on Nubia NaviX Ultra) both landed this week.
NeuralISP: rewriting the imaging pipeline
- Founders Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop worked on iPhone Portrait mode at Apple.
- Instead of the traditional multi-stage ISP, GlassAI jointly trains a network to go straight from RAW burst data to finished RGB, adding lens aberration deconvolution and sensor crosstalk correction.
- Unlike generative 'enhancement', it aims to recover information the sensor actually captured — crucial when an Agent may act on what it sees.
Why it matters for AI devices
- Screens-in AI needs OS context; screens-out AI needs fast, truthful vision. The camera shifts from saving memories to feeding machines evidence for action.
- GlassAI zoom is already in Honor's 600 series; it demoed real-time 4K processing and 20x+ zoom enhancement on Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen5 reference devices.
Redrawn hardware/software split: smaller lenses and pixels become viable when networks can reverse optical flaws, pointing to future co-design of lens, sensor, NPU and model from day one.
