After Shopify CEO's threat, ClaudeCode finally ships AGENTS.md support in v2.1.277

ClaudeCode 2.1.277 officially supports the AGENTS.md standard, after Anthropic ignored the request for a year — a GitHub issue with 5,000+ upvotes was closed as "not planned." The turning point came when Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke threatened to ban ClaudeCode at Shopify unless it read AGENTS.md, citing the "split brain" problem when team members use different tools. Anthropic's Thariq had argued that models aren't interchangeable and need model-specific system prompts and formatting. The new version still prefers CLAUDE.md, falling back to AGENTS.md only when it's absent, toggleable via /config. Lütke replied: "Great decision."
