Researcher Ipeirotis argues AI use in research is producing three tribes: the gatekeepers, who care about provenance and authorship and want AI banned or disclosed; the AI cultists, who care only about results regardless of origin; and an emerging third tribe of curators/storytellers — as AI cracks ever-harder mathematical proofs and discovery loses scarcity, the human role shifts to understanding results, judging their importance, and explaining them to everyone else.
