Home-labbing 7 GPUs for OCR loses to Google API once cooling and power are counted

The author works through the economics of home GPU rigs: running OCR on tens of millions of document pages with 7 self-hosted GPUs cost more in cooling and electricity than simply paying for Google's API. As he jokes, the tokens in his bathroom aren't VC-subsidized — scale always kills self-hosting, and buying APIs wins for smaller workloads.
