Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi: runaway AI risk is overblown, cyber is the real threat
a16z · x · 2026-09-19
In an a16z interview, Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi lays out his view on AI risk and adoption:
- Existential risk: Ghodsi isn't losing sleep over a runaway takeoff. Multiple conditions would have to hold simultaneously, and several opposite conditions currently exist—each frontier training run demands more power, GPUs, and engineers, with some attempts failing and burning huge sums. Until that reverses, he doesn't see a self-improving loop happening.
- Cyber is what he watches: the window between a vulnerability being published and weaponized has collapsed from years to hours, and most orgs aren't equipped for the coming jump in agentic capabilities.
- Adoption: most companies don't need a smarter model—models are already smart enough. The gap is context: enterprises fail to feed models their own data and workflows.
