If AI can do the assignment, does it still prove learning? An uncomfortable education question

If an AI can produce exactly the work we ask students to submit to prove they learned, we have two options: ban it, or ask whether that work ever really demonstrated learning. Correct answers, well-written essays, and solved exercises long served as reasonable evidence of understanding — a relationship AI has broken. The educational challenge is shifting: less focus on the final product, more on what a person can do with it — can they explain why the answer is right, can they defend it?
