Anthropic: Claude leads 26% of its AI R&D, collaborates on over 90%
anshulkundaje · x · 2026-09-19
Anthropic published three new metrics to publicly track AI self-development, with an internal snapshot:
- Share of AI R&D done by AI: 26% of its AI R&D work is "led" by Claude, completing most of a research task end-to-end under human supervision; Claude collaborates on more than 90% of AI R&D work under close human direction.
- How well AI agents are overseen.
- How compute is allocated.
Anthropic argues any frontier lab could publish the same measures with third-party verification, and that the gap between what frontier labs know and what the public knows should be minimized as the world debates pacing the frontier.
