Claude Code 2.1.277 adds AGENTS.md support, auto-used when CLAUDE.md is absent
Saboo_Shubham_ · x · 2026-09-19
Claude Code is adding support for AGENTS.md: starting with version 2.1.277, if no CLAUDE.md exists in a folder, Claude will check for and use AGENTS.md instead.
The behavior can be toggled in /config, letting projects maintain one cross-tool agent instructions file compatible with other AGENTS.md-aware coding agents.
