Hinton renews warning: AI will spiral out of control unless frontier labs slow down

Geoffrey Hinton, Nobel laureate and "godfather of AI," renewed his call to slow down: AI will get out of control unless we act. His regulatory proposals mainly target large frontier labs — forcing them to spend compute on AI safety and requiring safety testing plus disclosure before releasing powerful models. He issued a similar warning back in 2023: "these things will get to be much smarter than us and will take over."
