A new Stanford Medicine-led study suggests the brain is two separate adjacent organs rather than one unified organ: its front and back originated as independently evolved nervous systems over millions of years. The finding emerged while researchers tried and failed to grow nerve cells from the hindbrain in the lab. It could yield better experimental models for brainstem diseases like ALS and spinal muscular atrophy, and opens new ground for AI-neuroscience crossover work.
