Reuters reports Anthropic has quietly set up a real biology wet lab in the San Francisco Bay Area, aiming to let Claude command robotic units to run experiments with minimal human oversight. The lab isn't specifically for drug discovery, per a spokesperson. Supporting moves include the ClaudeScience software, Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan joining the board, a $400M stock acquisition of Coefficient Bio, hiring of biochemistry experts, and the Model Hardware Standard for AI-controlled lab equipment — already purchased by Genentech, Bristol Myers Squibb and Novo Nordisk. Anthropic says it won't run clinical trials or commercialize drugs, avoiding competition with pharma clients.
