Anil Seth argues consciousness may be inseparable from life in new AI consciousness paper
DimitrisPapail · x · 2026-09-18
In a paper in Behavioral and Brain Sciences, Anil Seth (Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science) makes the case for "biological naturalism": consciousness may be inseparable from being alive. A biological neuron isn't a simple input-output computer but a living cell that regulates its chemistry, consumes energy, and repairs itself — implying computational equivalence may not yield conscious AI. The paper also surveys why people think AI could be conscious, scenarios for artificial consciousness, and what we should (not) do about it.
