ChatGPT-generated files silently expire — here's the workaround
Ok_Negotiation_2587 · reddit · 2026-09-18
A Reddit user warns that every file ChatGPT generates with code — spreadsheets, charts, PDFs, zips — lives in a temporary workspace that gets wiped after inactivity. The chat and download link remain, but clicking them later returns "file expired" or "file not found."
Practical takeaways:
- Download files immediately; the chat is not storage.
- If already expired, ask ChatGPT to regenerate the file and click the new link right away. If it was built from an upload, you may need to re-upload first.
- Most important: ask ChatGPT to output the full code or final table as text in the chat. Chat text never expires, so you can always rebuild from it.
The author lost a cleaned-up spreadsheet by skipping that step, and disclosed they build AI Toolbox, a Chrome extension that exports conversations including code (though not the generated files themselves).
