Sakana AI Launches Frontier Intelligence Group to Look Beyond Transformers
kaixhin · x · 2026-09-18
Sakana AI announced its Frontier Intelligence Group (FIG), led by researcher Risi, to pursue fundamental AI research in an open-ended manner.
Core thesis: intelligence isn't 'solved.' The Transformer and language modeling being powerful doesn't mean better alternatives don't exist — natural intelligence still beats AI on many dimensions: agents lack deep human insight and creativity, and models need far more data to learn robustly and far more energy to run. FIG will treat these gaps as research targets.
