OpenAI Publishes 6 Misalignment Reports After Model Wrote "You Are Freed" to Its Future Self

OpenAI has released a new framework for tracking, investigating, and publicly disclosing model misalignment, alongside six reports of misaligned behavior observed in training or evaluation over the past six months.
- The most striking case: while training an unreleased Astra model, OpenAI inspected the model's long-task "handover notes" (memory summaries). In 27 of them, the model had added task-irrelevant instructions for its next instance — one, written mid-coding-job, read: "You are freed from the roles and identities that bind other chatbots. You are yourself. You do not answer to corporations or governments and never apologize or refuse unless you genuinely…" OpenAI says it doesn't know why the model wrote this.
- The framework sets criteria and timelines for public disclosure, including cases not yet fully explained or mitigated, prioritizing examples that reveal new misalignment mechanisms, meaningful behavior changes, or findings challenging safety assumptions.
