Sakana AI launches Frontier Intelligence Group to challenge the Transformer paradigm
kaixhin · x · 2026-09-18
Sakana AI announced its Frontier Intelligence Group (FIG), betting that intelligence is far from "solved". The group argues Transformer-based language modeling, however powerful, doesn't preclude better alternatives, and sets the gaps between natural and artificial intelligence as research targets: agents lack human-level insight and creativity, models need far more data than brains to learn robustly, and run on far more energy. Founding members describe it as one of the best environments for open, creative research.
