Claude optimized 30+ open-source bio models 4x faster in 4 weeks, code open-sourced
anshulkundaje · x · 2026-09-18
Anthropic's new Science Blog details how Claude, working within Claude Science, optimized over 30 open-source biomolecular modeling tools in under four weeks, achieving 4x average speedups partly via custom GPU kernels, plus a low-memory mode enabling accurate prediction of 10,000+ token systems on a single GPU node. All optimized code is open-sourced. Building on last month's de novo protein binder design demo, binder design now costs under $200. Anthropic is also co-sponsoring a protein design competition with Adaptyv Bio: 5 frontier problems, 5,000+ designs wet-lab validated, up to $1M in Claude credits, $250K compute credits from Modal, and DNA synthesis from Twist Bioscience.
