Anthropic unveils three metrics to track AI self-development, agent oversight and compute allocation

Anthropic published a measurement framework to help the public track the pace of AI development inside frontier labs, covering three dimensions:
- Extent of AI performing AI R&D: how much research is done by AI itself rather than humans, i.e. progress toward AI automating its own construction
- Oversight of autonomous agents: how well Anthropic can supervise and intervene in actions AI agents take on its systems
- Compute allocation: how compute resources powering more capable models are distributed
The company also shared an internal snapshot of these metrics, noting they would shift if frontier development were coordinated to slow down, as called for by CEO Dario Amodei. Anthropic plans to embed independent third-party evaluators from multiple organizations with access to internal processes, systems and data comparable to internal risk teams, to verify safety practices, report incidents and monitor key metrics.
