Ex-computational linguist: mathematicians' reaction to LLMs puts his old field to shame

The author, a former computational linguist, contrasts how positively mathematicians have responded to GPT-3/ChatGPT with how his own field reacted, recommending Quanta's coverage. In a follow-up he explains this is why he's "not dooming": if the main barrier for mathematicians accessing frontier models is data restrictions (ZDR), a foundation could fund a ZDR organization akin to supercomputer access programs or strike deals with the labs — an easy fix, he suspects.
