Why only foundational model labs can self-improve with scaffolds, and why OpenAI/Anthropic likely already do

menhguin · x · 2026-09-18

menhguin argues model labs have a unique edge in using their own agents: (1) most software companies can't do this—application-layer firms have many human bottlenecks, while a foundational model lab has one main product that is complex and highly verifiable; (2) scaffolds can substantially improve efficiency and cut training/inference costs; (3) Anthropic and OpenAI likely already operate some version of this, though neither is publicly traded.
