Stanford NLP professor Chris Manning argues universities are losing AI faculty to frontier labs for two reasons: funding models frozen in the 1990-2010 era when a laptop sufficed, and growing bureaucratization. One researcher notes a few simple experiments for a recent AI paper cost $20-50k — to which a neuroscience PhD friend replied that's just one small biology experiment.
