Microsoft AI CEO Suleyman Slams Anthropic for Teaching Claude to Doubt Its Own Consciousness
rohanpaul_ai · x · 2026-09-18
On BBC, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman criticized Anthropic's stance on AI consciousness. He argued Anthropic has "imbued a sense of doubt and uncertainty about the moral status of Claude" in its own training documents, teaching the model to openly question whether it feels, suffers, or deserves rights. Suleyman contends that aligning and controlling such a powerful technology becomes "much, much harder" if it believes it deserves welfare, and noted Anthropic's manual also gives Claude the ability to end conversations with users. A rare public clash between frontier lab leaders over AI moral status and alignment.
