Stanford HAI Seminar: AI Policy Can't Keep Up With World Models That Act in the Physical World

Stanford HAI will host a September 30 seminar, "The World Model and Spatial Intelligence Era: Governing AI Beyond Language," featuring Daniel Zhang, Caroline Meinhardt, Jiajun Wu, and Russell Wald.
The core argument: AI policy was built for systems that talk, and governance frameworks haven't caught up with AI that can see, navigate, and act in the physical world. Building on a recent HAI policy brief, the session examines how world models—AI systems that maintain working representations of real environments to predict how they change under action—could transform infrastructure planning, crisis response, scientific experimentation, and embodied AI, while raising governance gaps that today's language-centric policy fails to address.
The event is free and open to the public, both in person and virtually. It is the third of seven sessions in HAI's Fall Seminar Series.
