Meta oversight board orders removal of UK deepfakes, slams 'inadequate' safeguards

Meta's oversight board ruled Facebook was wrong to keep up a fake video of a Scottish Labour councillor making inflammatory remarks about refugees, and that an AI-generated video falsely depicting a young Muslim campaign volunteer giving health advice should have been removed. The board called Meta's safeguards against AI deepfakes "consistently and fundamentally inadequate" and recommended policy changes including demoting "high risk" content. Co-chair Pamela San Martin noted deepfakes are increasingly used to harass and silence women in public discourse.
