Stanford's Manning says METR faces 'client capture' from frontier-lab dependence

A debate over the independence of AI evaluation orgs: Stanford professor Christopher Manning argues that while METR is financially independent from frontier labs, its entire business is working with them, creating a dependence where "you can't risk doing anything which causes you to lose your business" — a client-capture problem Stanford structurally doesn't have.
Yoav Artzi amplifies: Manning is right about METR and similar orgs, but when it comes to academic labs doing evals, the org in question isn't Stanford — it's the labs themselves (profs, students), a much smaller and more sensitive group.
