Maxime Labonne released ChessFly, a chess-playing model built on the complete adult fruit fly FlyWire connectome: 138,639 neurons and 15M+ connections kept frozen exactly as reconstructed.
- Method: only three things are learned — a board-to-10,855-sensory-neuron encoder (gains only, never signs), per-neuron homeostatic gain/threshold, and a decoder reading central brain into a 1968-move policy plus 64 win-probability bins; activity settles over 5 steps
- Results: trained on 4.4M annotated Lichess positions, recovers Stockfish's top move 30.4% with value MAE 0.081; baselines: random legal move 3%, most-common-move dead network 13%
- Playable: browser ChessFly Space, with an optional depth-3 search where one tree level is a single forward pass
