UIUC Launches Center for Orchestrated Agentic Biology to Study Brain Aging with Multi-Agent AI

The Beckman Institute at UIUC has awarded a 2026 seed grant to a team led by iSchool assistant professor Haohan Wang, with Nien-Pei Tsai and Aleksei Aksimentiev, to create the Center for Orchestrated Agentic Biology (OAB).
- Idea: Orchestrate multiple specialized AI models (protein structure prediction, molecular simulation) into a collaborative multi-agent team, since single models struggle with complex biological questions.
- First target: the E2F-p16INK4a pathway that governs neuronal aging. Wang builds the agent system to decompose problems; Aksimentiev validates AI-predicted protein structures via molecular simulation; Tsai tests predictions in real young and aging neurons.
- Ambition: a reusable template transferable to virtually any cellular pathway, giving agentic AI collaboration a concrete foothold in life sciences.
