Semantic web's unfinished half: LLMs solved machine understanding, accountability didn't

The author argues the semantic web had two goals: machine understanding, which LLMs have largely solved, and machine accountability — still unsolved and increasingly urgent, especially for agentic SDLC. Inspired by Alex Karp's "no ontology, no love" remark, the author, who published ontology research back then, says they've spent recent weeks working on the problem again: the semantic web failed, but its ideas shouldn't be thrown out entirely.
