Suleyman says AIs aren't conscious; researchers push back on 'model welfare' debate
aran_nayebi · x · 2026-09-17
Microsoft AI's Mustafa Suleyman published an article arguing AIs are not conscious and dismissing the growing 'model welfare' movement as irresponsible. Researchers including Aran Nayebi pushed back: our understanding of consciousness is far too limited to definitively rule out AI sentience, and even a small chance of getting this wrong could be catastrophic. A substantive debate on AI consciousness and ethical duty of care.
