TMLR Zoom defense test: 7 of 7 authors failed to explain their own papers
DynamicWebPaige · x · 2026-09-17
Delip Rao reports that TMLR editors took the unusual step of inviting authors of a subset of papers, before desk rejection, to a Zoom call answering questions about their work. Only 7 of 10 invited accepted — and all 7 failed to answer any questions, suggesting many authors publish work they cannot explain. DynamicWebPaige responded that this shows academic incentive structures must shift from publishing output to actual understanding and explanation.
