MIT camp builds self-healing 'Frankensteel' using shape-memory wires

A student at MIT's Materials Genome Camp poured molten alloy into a mold embedded with shape-memory wires to create "Frankensteel," a material that can heal cracks: the wires contract and pull the crack surfaces back together.
Led by Professor Greg Olson's research group, the camp trains middle and high school teachers in hands-on experiments; 15 teachers from the U.S. and abroad attended in July.
