Independent researcher @kevinnbass audited METR (Model Evaluation and Threat Research), the AI-safety org promoted by Dario Amodei, using public records only. The org raised $71M over the past 6 months — a sudden 5x jump — yet public filings account for only $350K of it.
He published a GitHub investigation pack, "metr-deep":
- Built by a plan-driven pipeline of 59 research lanes, two adversarial audits, seven figure audits and a claim gate
- Every fact sits in a row of research/.csv with source URL, exact quote, lane and review verdict
- 4,644 cited rows and 30 figures reconstruct METR's funding, in-kind support, personnel relationships and governance conditions, flagging documented Anthropic investor/company connections
The structured data is also queryable via a chatbot for journalists. Headline finding: we don't know how the premier AI safety org is funded.
