Sam Altman says GPT-5.5 was roughly as good as an average math professor, GPT-5.6 as good as a top 1–2% one — and the internal model past Astra can do things even the best mathematicians cannot. He calls math an unusually fast takeoff, but by almost any definition, a fast takeoff.
