Profound raises $180M at $1.8B valuation as AEO race heats up

AI marketing platform Profound closed a $180M Series D at an $18B... a $1.8B post-money valuation, led by Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins just seven months after its $96M Series C — Sequoia's third consecutive bet.

From influencer marketing to AEO: Founder James Cadwallader, previously co-founder of influencer agency Kyra, spotted the problem: Nike spends $4B a year on marketing, yet ask ChatGPT for the best running shoe and Nike may not appear. AI returns a single authoritative answer — a harsher rule than the SEO era. Profound started with monitoring (brand mentions, citations, competitor presence in AI answers), then launched AIMarketer to generate briefs and content drafts, plus Ads Studio for AI ad buying, aiming to replicate how SEO software entered marketing workflows.

Traction: Revenue tripled in six months, 1,000+ enterprise customers including Comcast, Estée Lauder and Walmart, covering a third of the Fortune 100; Estée Lauder became a global partner.

The race: incumbents like Semrush (Adobe-acquired, Brand Visibility) and Ahrefs (Brand Radar, 456M prompts tracked) are adding AI visibility; native players like Peec AI ($10M+ ARR) and AthenaHQ are scaling fast; China's Zhitui Shidai serves 400+ brands. Gartner predicts traditional search organic traffic will drop 50%+ by 2028.
