DeepMind launches Institute for debate on human flourishing in an AGI world

Google DeepMind has launched the DeepMind Institute, a new platform for interdisciplinary debate and research on human flourishing in a world with AI, overseen by Shane Legg, Demis Hassabis and James Manyika.

Launch essays include: Rohin Shah and Anca Dragan on reasoning transparency — monitoring chain-of-thought offers a window to detect scheming and deception that must stay open; Julian Jacobs and Alex Imas evaluating eleven economic policies for AGI-era disruption; Demis Hassabis proposing a dynamic framework for testing frontier AI capabilities; and Stephen Cave's "principles for a new utopianism" — medium-termism, humility, pluralism — with a modest proposal for Universal Basic Services (UBS).
