AI floods: Princeton's Narayanan maps 50 institutional processes breaking under AI slop
_akpiper · x · 2026-09-16
Princeton professor Arvind Narayanan introduces the concept of "AI floods": AI has eliminated the friction institutions relied on as natural spam protection — peer review, job applications, legal complaints can now be automated, threatening to overwhelm entire systems. His new project aims to:
- Compile 50 processes breaking due to AI, with evidence
- Build a taxonomy of institutional responses to AI-generated content
- Create forums for affected organizations to share tools and strategy
- Identify common patterns and effective defenses
He argues the harm is under-recognized for three reasons: there are 50+ kinds of floods so it registers as 50 separate problems; the harms are diffuse (e.g., people stop opening cold emails) so no news story; and unlike vivid agent-swarm hacks, the damage is hard to explain.
