Google says Search Console's AI Mode position tracking will keep evolving
gaganghotra_ · x · 2026-09-16
Google's John Mueller said on LinkedIn that position and impression tracking for AI Mode, AI Overviews and Google Search in Search Console will "evolve over time" as the products themselves evolve.
He acknowledged "edge-cases" in tracking these metrics, stressed the goal is not an absolute truth for position counting but something useful for site owners to understand how their site is shown, and said Google will update documentation when significant changes land — meaning SEOs will need to adapt how they interpret the data.
