AI danger isn't intelligence but capability, autonomy, access, scale and objectives combined

The author argues that the "AI will become smarter than humans" narrative misses the real risk: danger comes from the combination of capability, autonomy, access, scale and objective. The shift from chatbots (answering questions) to agentic systems (taking actions) is fundamental — as autonomous loops lengthen, humans shift from operators to supervisors and lose the ability to explain why a system acted. Invoking the classic engineering maxim that a system that cannot be sufficiently observed cannot be reliably controlled, the author calls for observability, verification, constraints, auditability, provenance and fail-safe mechanisms.
