FDE means three different jobs: Palantir veteran separates real product work from rebranded consulting

Drawing on a piece by Vinoo Ganesh, the author unpacks the FDE hiring boom: OpenAI, Anthropic, Databricks and Mistral are all recruiting; Salesforce called it the hottest job; Atlassian posted a Principal FDE role.

Key argument: "forward deployed" now describes three nearly disjoint jobs — pre-sales engineer, a quota-carrying salesperson who writes Python, and genuine productized deployment. The dividing line: whether what you fix at the customer gets distilled into reusable product; if not, you're a consultant with a fancy title.

Ganesh's credentials: he built Palantir's Project Frontline rotation (250 engineers, now leading FDE teams at OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Anduril), ran business engineering at Citadel, and now leads Kepler. Named to a16z's 8-week FDE Fellowship, he compared notes with FDEs from Snowflake and Anthropic before concluding the term means three different things.
